Fishing is not a popular profession among the people of Selea-Bambao. It’s regarded as uncool profession by many citizens of the Village. Nevertheless, there are a few people from the village who go fishing occasionally. Unfortunately, for those who want to do it; they normally finding it extremely difficult due to the lack of proper fishing equipments. This has made many people lose the courage and valour of fishing.

It seems quite an ironic and strange for a village situated nearby an extremely rich ocean for its people to dislike fishing and even feel uncomfortable with the title of 'Fishman'. What is so astonishing here is the fact that fish is one of the most popular diet on the Islands.

In Grande comore as whole fishing is a very risky job to undertake mainly because of the lack of proper tools and protection. There are numerous cases of fishman disappearing without a trace. Nevertheless, some people still want to fish, while others seem to be reluctant to appreciate the fishermen's efforts and hardwork to feed their families and the general public. These people are more than happy to consume their catch. This is illustrated by the fact that when the fishermen return from the sea, there is always a many people queueing to buy their fish. At at the same time they still laugh at the fish men and undervalue them. Who is pulling the wool over somebody's eyes here?

If you think about it, the fishing trade in Grande should be one of the jobs that helps many people bring decent income to ordinary families. But since the government is unable to provide any assistance for most of those wanting to make a living or feed their family from fishing, the fishing profession will still be seen as a hazardous way of making a living. We believe that it is one of the most important way that will help the country prosper. It is not a big secret that other countries benefit greatly from its waters and there are a lot of illegal fishing that takes place here.
